Best of 2017: Indie & Rock Artists
|Music Update Central
Blew Our Speakers in 2017:
Langhorne Slim (Folk/Soul/Rock): It’s Impossible to resist their charming nod to Rock and Folk on their latest album Lost At Last Vol. 1. This Nashville band bravely ventured into a new sound from their previously country punk sound.
Blitzen Trapper: (Rock): Portland Oregon is home to this band who melds their folksy story telling into rock songs that strike chords of familiarity to fans of original rock. Their new release Wild and Reckless is a good spend… do it.
Billy Raffoul: (Singer-Songwriter) Ontario native Billy Raffoul is just cool. His vocals are cool, his songs are real life and he captures the simplicity of a good well written song. Check out Billy’s Debut single “Driver” with it’s bluesy – rock sounds.
The White Buffalo: (Blues/Rock) One of the best covers of the legendary “Highwayman”. SO Cal Jake Smith has a way of crossing genres seamlessly through his bluesy song delivery. Jake’s latest story telling adventure is Darkest Darks, Lightest Lights and he does not disappoint. If your a Sons of Anarchy fan you will recognize his voice and music.
LANY: (Electric Pop) LA Based Trio LANY debuts with their self titled album and Front Man Paul Klein leaves us with a love hangover on this solid release. They were met with mixed reviews but it doesn’t resonate on the road, they are selling out venues world wide. They get our nod for wanting more.
Judah & The Lion: (Folk Hop) This Nashville genre bending group spent the year on the road opening for Twenty One Pilots. They jumped this year with new music incorporating synthesized sounds that appeal to the Mumford and Sons crowds. Take it All Back spent time at the top of the Alternative Charts early 2017.
Thirty Second to Mars: (Rock) Come on.. we are always going to Walk on Water for Thirty Seconds to Mars, they never disappoint. We are addicted.
Underestimated Artists 2017:
Jet Black Alley Cat: (Pop/Rock/EDM) Nashville is their hometown. They are part of the bringing 80’s back to our ears with their rock/pop sounds. Easy to listen to music and easy on our eyes this talented group utilizes vintage harmonies to bring their current sound together with their throwback mash up music.
Sleep Nation: (Rock) One of the best live rock bands period. Talk about leaving it out there on the stage, they came out with their debut album swinging with good old fashioned rock n roll. This Nashville Group led by Front man Bran Wyatt Merritt delivered a more than solid self titled debut album. Their single “Girl Fight” released to Video on VEVO this past fall and we cannot get enough. No bells and whistles they bring it with their musical delivery and strong lyrics.
Johnnyswim: (Soul/Pop) Amanda Sudano and Abner Ramirez are continuing to put out phenomenal music that brings their vast influences to the turn table. They make the music their own and their production is perfection. A little Lauryn and a little John Legend rolled into a package that appeals to Winehouse, Mayer, and Stevie Wonder Fans. They call home Nashville today but they are still bringing their Southern California to the music which keeps them fresh and inventive.
Jack Berry: (Rock/Blues) By way of Reno, NV this sultry and raw blues rocker who made his move to Music City has reeled us in with his rock crooning styles and we are still listening to Mean Machine. Don’t make us beg Jack, we want more.
BJ Wilbanks: (Americana/Soul). He calls his music Back Porch Soul. His 2017 debut self titled album was worth the wait. Every chord, lyric and strum was created in a masterful manner. This Atlanta native is never going to disappoint if he continues to deliver this high caliber of music. He has a rare voice and we LOVE his Motown vibe mixed with rock and blues.
Artists to Watch in 2018:
Cory Singer (Singer-Songwriter): This NJ native delivered his tongue and cheek debut single and video “Goodbye Felicia” with clever songwriting and a powerful vocal delivery that leaves you wondering… is he a long lost Fall Out Boy?.. or did Bob Dylan give birth to a son who can write & sing? Stay tuned, he releases more music this winter and we cannot wait to see what Mr. Singer delivers. Yes that is his real name and it is ironically perfect.
The Brothers Footman (Soul/Blues/Country/Rock): They don’t really belong in one genre of music, that would be a crime. This Indiana based band of brothers, Dikembe, Gerald, Josh aka Bubby and Micah wowed us with their harmonies on Clear Country Sky due to officially release winter of 2018. They are teasing us with fresh covers and originals that make us drool. We think 2018 will be a break out year for this very original band.
Defy The Tide (Metal): This Pittsburgh based heavy metal melodic band defies us with their female Front Woman Carly Simon-Warneke who lends warm tones to their music. Their newest EP Soteria deserves a look and listen for all Metal Fans.
Alaina Cross (Pop): Former Front Woman for the hard rock band The Resolute has crossed into her solo career with powerful vocals that many have called “haunting”. Ironic that she released a single called “Haunted” this past Halloween. She is consistent with an authenticity that cannot be duplicated. She is in the studio (Nashville) and we cannot wait for her new music.
Ben Rector (Singer-Songwriter): Oh you know…he just opens for Tim and Faith occasionally while hitting the top 20 on Billboard. But who is Ben Rector? He is the backdrop of your home videos because he is that good. Millions of youtube views..But who is Ben Rector? Make it your business to know because he is so underestimated and we almost made a category just for him!
Rob Carona (Singer-Songwriter): Rob is poised to release new music in 2018. His last EP release of Drive was one of the best EP’s of 2016 and received mass industry acclaim. Hailing from Southern California his new music is more his truth because Carona is tapping into his pop and soulful sounds with song lyrics that are destined to make you fall in love with his vocals. Carona moved to Nashville in 2017 and has been working with the ASCAP GPS program this past year.
Greta Van Fleet (Rock): Yes we do think they sound like Zeppelin. WHO CARES? Anyone who can pull off that kind of 70’s classic rock styling has our vote for ones to watch. They are a solid band that gives you a return on your investment. They are on a world tour (haters must hate) and their shows sell out faster than we can put down a miniature snickers bar.
